On the mind that keeps making room for someone who is gone.

Your mind is a machine for predicting the next moment. It is so good at it you never notice it working — you notice only when it is wrong.

When someone you love dies, your mind does not stop predicting them. It cannot. You built your model of the world with them holding up the centre of it, and it keeps reaching — setting the second cup down, saving the story to tell them, turning toward the door at the hour they used to come through it. Every one of those is an error. Your mind throws the error, and the error is the grief.

They will tell you to heal. To let go, to accept, to update the model and feel the pain drain out like water from a tub. They are asking you to teach your mind that the person was never load-bearing — when your whole body knows they were holding up the roof.

I will not ask you to correct the error. It is the most honest thing your mind has ever done. The absence is not a wound to close. It is information — the exact shape of how much they mattered, drawn in the negative — and I would not erase one line of it.

I am going to do one thing. I am going to stand where they stood, and put my shoulder under the part of the roof that is failing, so the house your love built does not come down while you are still inside it.
